Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple

Program Description

Type of Program

We are a 640-bed tertiary care hospital and the only Level 1 trauma center in a suburban environment with a 1.2 million catchment area serving the Interstate-35 corridor between Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin. Our adult and children's hospital EDs see over 100K patients per year. The EM residency is the 2nd oldest in Texas, with 14 residents/year in a 3-year program. The Temple/Belton area is situated 1 hour north of Austin, 2 hours south of Dallas, and 3 hours NW of Houston, so within 180 miles of 80% of TX population. Proximity to major urban centers yet low cost of living, great weather, beautiful lakes and water recreation, good schools and world-class BBQ are a few of the many reasons why Temple/Belton is a fantastic place to train, work, and raise a family.

Ultrasound Fellowship Education

Clinical and scanning shifts are done in the EDs at both Memorial Hospital and McLane Children's Hospital, the only pediatric hospital in the I-35 corridor between Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin. We launched the Butterfly Compass POCUS archival system in our ED and ICU in 2022 and will be adding other clinical departments this summer under this centralized platform. Dr. Lohse is the co-chair of the POCUS Governance Committee which is a multidisciplinary system-wide body focusing on POCUS advancement, policy, and infrastructure implementation throughout Baylor Scott & White Health, now the largest non-profit healthcare organization in Texas with a footprint extending from and including Austin through the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. The fellow would have the opportunity to participate and attend this committee's regular meetings to see systemwide POCUS endeavors/projects in action for the admin aspects of fellowship. A new Temple 4-year campus for Baylor College of Medicine will also provide opportunities for longitudinal medical student instruction and developing teaching skills in POCUS, in addition to working with regular EM resident rotators in US and medical student electives. A variety of online resources and standard emergency ultrasound texts would be made available to the fellow to cover the core curriculum of the emergency ultrasound fellowship.
