Indiana University - Riley Hospital for Children (Pediatric Ultrasound)

IU is home to one of the oldest and largest EM residencies in the nation and was established in 1976. Our Teaching Hospitals see over 250,000 patients per year.

We are home to an expanding research program with multiple faculty receiving grant funding from the NIH, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

It is also home to one of the expansive ultrasound program in the nation with both general and pediatric subspecialty training programs. Our motivation is to provide fellows the opportunity to become experts in emergency ultrasound and mentorship for a fulfilling career.

Goals: Develop physicians who will advance and improve patient care and outcomes through ultrasound education, clinical integration and research.
Objective: Develop expertise in clinical ultrasound through education, teaching, administration, research and clinical integration.
Scope of Practice: Clinical ultrasounds (CUS) performed by emergency physicians are for diagnostic, procedural guidance, resuscitation, and monitoring therapy purposes.

Fellowship Education
1. Acquisition of approved greater than 800 ultrasound scans
2. Faculty-proctored and self-directed scanning shifts
3. Biweekly ultrasound conference and Interactive learning
4. Monthly pediatric emergency US conference
5. Optional rotations with PICU, ECHO lab, Anesthesia, OB/GYN, Radiology available
6. Completed Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship or RMDS certification

Teaching:
1. Bedside supervisory teaching of medical students, residents and staff
2. Moderating learner feedback during biweekly ultrasound conference and interactive learning
3. Teaching and supervising attending examination to achieve credentialing qualification and continuing ultrasound education
4. Participation in local, regional, national and international conferences and workshops.
5. Teaching and collaborating with in-hospital and out-of-hospital disciplines.
6. Lectures and Grand Rounds

Administration:
1. Providing Quality Assurance (QA)
2. Image management
3. Equipment and machine maintenance
4. Billing, credentialing and reimboursement

Research:
1. Complete an original quality improvement project or clinical research project and development of manuscript for potential publication.

Clinical:
1. Provide patient care within the department of emergency medicine
