The Medical College of Virginia at VCU was established in 1837 to serve the needs of Virginia and surrounding states. It is classified as having "very high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The VCU emergency department is a level 1 trauma center and regional referring center that sees greater than 110,000 visits a year. The ED sits at the base of the state's only critical care hospital, a 15 story 232 bed hospital dedicated to critical care medicine.

Ultrasound Fellowship Education
The Fellows will be required to complete one year of training in which they will accomplish over 1000 ultrasounds. Fellows will be given the option to sit for both the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer exam and the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer exam to help test their knowledge. In addition to these certifications the Fellows will have the ability to take other specialty certifications including NBE CCEexam, ASE, RVT, and MSK.
During the fellowship the Fellows will receive advanced training in tranesophogeal echosonography (TEE), stress echo, advanced doppler, and contrast enhanced sonography. They will have the ability to participate in a number of ongoing research trials in the fields of education, pediatrics, trauma, ENT, critical care, and emergency medicine.
Throughout the year the Fellows will be allotted a travel stipend to attend conferences as well as training seminars both regionally and nationally.
