Harbor - UCLA Medical Center

Program Description

Type of Program

Our Mission:
To prepare our fellows to become successful leaders in clinical emergency medicine ultrasonography by providing comprehensive training, academic mentorship, and abundant opportunities for faculty development in a variety of clinical settings, all supported by university (UCLA) resources. To uphold the highest standards of practice, education, and academic investigation in clinical ultrasonography for the betterment of our patients, trainees, and medical specialty.

UCLA-Affiliated Clinical Ultrasound Fellows:
- Are academic faculty of two stellar Emergency Medicine residencies (Harbor-UCLA and UCLA Ronald Reagan/Olive View) and for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
- Learn from 7 core POCUS faculty, with a wide range of interests, experience, and ongoing projects.
- Pursue a subsidized Masters program or advanced fellowship at UCLA (most commonly in research, medical education, public policy or public health).
- Learn to become leaders in our subspecialty through practice (our scans affects clinical decisions and are loaded directly into PACS), teaching (including bedside, conferences/meetings, and simulation sessions), administration (e.g. weekly QA/QI, machine maintenance), program development (e.g. at the VA Hospital, or the TEE program at Harbor), and clinical investigation (of your choice!), while being mentored by national leaders in POCUS.

Year Fellowship Started

Starting in 2020, we merged our two well-established fellowship programs with a long, successful history starting 2000 (Harbor-UCLA) and 2010 (UCLA RR/OV).

Ultrasound Program Status

Active. Several thousand training exams are recorded per year. Our exams are entered in the hospital information PACS system alongside radiology, cardiology and OB/GYN exams.

We are actively seeking initial accreditation for our program in 2021 through EUFAC, and will update our status here.

- Perform weekly scan shifts (asynchronous and one-on-one).
- Attend / teach at national & regional ultrasound conferences.
- Coordinate and teach at resident (multi-disciplinary) & medical student rotations.
- Deliver grand round presentation at department and local conferences.
- FOAMed / FOAMus contribution to emDOCs.net US Probe series.
- Complete advanced degree (Masters or graduate certificate) at UCLA
- Junior faculty development opportunities through two residency programs (Harbor-UCLA, and UCLA-RR/OV) and Geffecn School of Medicine at UCLA

Do you bill for ultrasounds?

Yes at Harbor-UCLA and Ronald Regan-UCLA.

No at Olive-View and VA at this time.

Do you require follow up imaging for patients who get ultrasounds?

No. In many cases, operative and other medical decisions are made solely on emergency department ultrasounds, which are uploaded onto the PACS.

Other Information

- Sponsorship to complete concurrent masters degree at UCLA (MPH, MPP, MS, etc.).
- Strong research support with requirement to complete one project.
