Other Duties

The Fellowship year begins with an Emergency US Orientation month during which fellowship directors begin by discussing each fellows unique professional goals for the fellowship year. Fellows enjoy one on one time with the fellowship directors on a weekly basis, free of all other training program responsibilities. During this time all core applications, resources, and workflow solutions are discussed in detail.

We have a full time Emergency Ultrasound Service Monday through Friday. During the morning, fellows perform clinical bedside US examinations in the Adult ED, Pediatric ED, and Trauma bays under the supervision of US faculty. In the afternoon fellows assist with Emergency US training programs for medical students, residents, PA's, and attending staff, both within the department of EM, as well as to other departments in the hospital including hospitalists, intensivists, and surgeons.

Additionally, fellows benefit from the opportunity to rotate in different departments utilizing bedside ultrasound including the Pediatric ED, MICU, Trauma unit and TICU, Echo lab, US Guided Regional Anesthesia Service, and Hospitalist Procedure Service as desired.

Each week a day is set aside for image review and academic exercises, typically including an brief lecture or podcast, a review of recent literature on topic of the week and one on one image review with ultrasound faculty. The day includes two hours of image review, one entirely dedicated to fellow studies, and a second with residents. Our fellows directly participate in and learn the quality assurance and credentialing process as a part of their training. We encourage development of an academic portfolio of images, cases, and teaching materials during the fellowship.

Fellows then review a year long curriculum of alternating weekly Journal Club topics with faculty and residents including chapter reviews from leading texts within EUS, clinical research, as well as a discussion of the latest literature. The curriculum is updated each year and revised to target the focus and interest of each fellow.

Fellowship curriculum topics discussed include: developing a research project from beginning through manuscript submission, EUS policies, EUS education and integration into undergraduate medical education and the fundamentals of establishing a clinical ultrasound program.
