The Center of Ultrasound Education is pleased to offer a 1 year fellowship in Clinical and Point of Care Ultrasound. This fellowship offers a several unique opportunities in both training and practice. Our fellowship is fully accredited and we have faculty from multiple specialties participating in educational program, including 3 faculty with FPD certification.

This is a one-year program with outstanding clinical, international and teaching opportunity at a 95,000-pts/yr Level 1 Trauma Center. Our fellowship faculty are leaders in the field of Point of Care Ultrasound with an abundance of publications and experience, and are diverse in their practice style, offering the learner a broad range of instruction. Fellows have the opportunity to work in both academic-urban ED and in a rural-community ED. The fellowship is open to any specialty.

At MCG, we encourage a close learning environment with ample individual instruction both in the hospital and during didactics. This is fostered by regular off campus interactions including barbeques on the river, mountain biking, and group teaching trips to Panama and Peru. Other international opportunities to scan include an annual diving trip to Belize, and regular medical mission trips to Africa and SE Asia. Our fellow has a unique opportunity for extended ultrasound rotations (1-8 weeks duration) at partner sites in Panama. During this rotation, the fellow will have the opportunity to perform ultrasound in multiple hospitals, teach local Emergency Medicine residents and University of Panama students and work jointly with MCG’s Panamanian Ultrasound fellow.

This program will absolutely give you all tools and personal instruction to earn your Advanced Emergency Ultrasound Certification and go as far as you would like in the field of Point of Care Ultrasound... as well as visit exotic places and make some great friends along the way! We offer Clinical Ultrasound fellowships opportunities in multiple specialties: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Hospitalist, Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and others.

The Emergency Ultrasound fellowship was started in 2003 and typically trains one to three fellow per year.

The Center of Ultrasound Education is supported and funded through the University president and provost. The mission is to train all students, residents and faculty using ultrasound as an educational tool. The Department of Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and Medicine supports the fellowship by providing the clinical practice environment for the respective fellows. The fellowship is supported enthusiastically by the hospital system including administration as well as the Department of Radiology.

The core CUSE staff includes a multi-disciplinary and multi specialty team consisting of 9 faculty members with dedicated funding for ultrasound education ( represented are Emergency Medicine (5 - 3 with FPD certification), Pediatric Emergency Medicine (2), Internal Medicine (1), Family Medicine/Sports Medicine (1), Surgery (1), Anesthesiology (1), Critical Care (1) and a multi-system certified sonographer. All faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine have credentials for use of ultrasound clinically with 10 full-time faculty members completing a fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound.

Matt Lyon, MD, has published approximately 60 peer-reviewed articles in the last 15 years on Emergency Ultrasound topics. He is the Executive Director for the Center of Ultrasound Education. He is a well-funded researcher with a research focus on utilizing ultrasound for traumatic brain detection and assessment. He is also the Associate Dean for Experiential Learning, responsible for the medical school ultrasound program (2-4year campuses and 5-2yr regional campuses across Georgia).

Daniel Kaminsten, MD, is an internationally known clinician, educator and researcher focused on ultrasound diagnosis of tropical infectious diseases. An emergency physician by training, he works with the London School of Tropical Medicine and the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt (IMTAvH) tropical medicine institute at Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru.

Richard Schwartz, MD, Chairman of Emergency Medicine, created the Center of Operational Medicine, which provides training and support to governmental and non-governmental entities on disaster medicine, international medicine, and tactical medicine.

This fellowship follows the SCUF fellowship guidelines. The fellowship is fully accredited.

The fellowship requirements are tailored the needs and interests of the fellowship physician. We offer unique opportunities for training. Our fellows are encouraged to travel, train and educate internationally. We have dedicated relationships with many hospitals and universities internationally. Most notably we provide the ultrasound education for the University of Panama medical students and faculty as well as the emergency medicine residents at the Social Security Hospital. As part of the fellowship, the fellows have travel funding as well as dedicated time to train in international locations. This allows for a very broad experience: working in resource limited settings, settings with a high level of pathology, particularly tropical infectious diseases, and unique educational opportunities.

Since we provide ultrasound education using a fully integrated curriculum at both the medical school and residency level (FM / IM / EM / Surgery / Anesthesiology / Pediatrics / and all critical care fellowships), the ultrasound fellow can train in multiple environments as well as gain experience teaching a wide variety of learners. This allows the fellow not only to become an exceptional clinician-sonogrpaher, but also an exceptional educator.

Yes - we utilize a hospital-wide POCUS billing and documentation system.

All examinations performed by hospital credentialed physicians are final examinations. Follow up examinations are not required unless the clinical situation warrants a follow up examination.

Fellows receive a generous compensation package, including a competitive salary, CME salary, paid vacation (4 weeks) and CME time (1 week), Mac laptop computer for use during the fellowship, ultrasound texts, full benefits , and ACEP membership. There is dedicated international travel time integrated into the fellowship also. The Center of Ultrasound Education (home of the fellowship) has over 5000 sq feet of dedicated training space, with advanced simulators and up-to-date ultrasound systems. We are partnered with Philips Healthcare but the fellow will gain experience not only with Philips products but also SonoSite, GE and Zonaire/Mindray.
