Type of Program

The Pediatric Point-Of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Fellowship at Norton Children's Hospital, affiliated with the University of Louisville School of Medicine is one of the few pediatric POCUS fellowships in the Midwest and is located in Louisville Kentucky. We have a large pediatric POCUS fellowship trained faculty with 2 ultrasound fellowship trained faculty.

Norton Children's Pediatric Emergency provides care at two pediatric emergency department locations in the Louisville metropolitan area, including Norton Children's Hospital, a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center & Norton Children's Medical Center. Norton Children's provide care for more than 185,000 patient visits yearly from across the region. The pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) section consists of 22 PEM faculty. The emergency department serves as an educational center for 9 PEM fellows, medical students, and residents from the pediatrics, emergency medicine, and family medicine programs of the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

The PEM section of the University of Louisville School of Medicine at Norton Children's Hospital currently has 22 POCUS credentialed faculty who perform about 2,100 point-of-care ultrasound exams annually, approximately 50% of them for direct patient care. Our clinical ultrasound program is accredited by ACEP's CUAP. Our division is a leader in POCUS guided regional anesthesia for pain control in the PEM. We currently have two US machines on our main campus and an additional machine at our satellite campus. We also have a top of the line commercial image archive system with robust QA/QI abilities.

Ultrasound Fellowship Education

Our one year pediatric POCUS fellowship offers an exceptional learning opportunity through rotations in pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric cardiology, pediatric radiology, and adult emergency medicine departments. These rotations will be located at Norton Children's Hospital, other hospitals in the Norton Healthcare system, and the University of Louisville Hospital. The pediatric POCUS fellowship will help fellows gain expertise in ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation, develop research and administrative experience, and integrate ultrasound skills with clinical practice to become a leader in the field of pediatric point-of-care ultrasound.
