The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center staff two emergency departments in the Omaha metropolitan area.

Nebraska Medicine is a two hospital system with the primary location being an academic tertiary/quaternary care facility with designation as a cancer, stroke, transplant and level 1 trauma center. Our second location is a community hospital. Combined the emergency departments have 90,000+ visits annually.

All EM faculty hold privileges to perform abdominal aorta ultrasound, E-FAST, and ultrasound-guided procedures.

Majority of faculty hold privileges in cardiac ultrasound and at least one other application. On average, our faculty hold privileges in six different clinical ultrasound examinations.

The diversity of faculty expertise will enhance the education of the ultrasound fellow.

First and foremost, the fellow will develop advanced clinical ultrasound skills. They will have the opportunity to learn the nuances of emergency ultrasound that will prepare them for daily use in their clinical practice.

In addition to the acquisition of advanced skills, the fellow will then hone the teaching skills necessary to lead ultrasound within any emergency department. This will be accomplished through active involvement in simulation, medical student education, resident education, bedside teaching, continued staff development, and interdepartmental relationships.

Throughout the year, the fellow will participate in the development and administration of the ultrasound program, including unique opportunities to innovate in ultrasound education (fresh tissue models, advanced simulation, virtual reality, and augmented virtual reality). Through these experiences, our fellow will be prepared to tackle the administrative and educational challenges that exist within any ultrasound program, new or old, and academic or community.
