18-20 Clinical Hours per week in the Pediatric Emergency Department at CCMC

Other Duties

During their ultrasound time, the fellow will supervise PEM fellows, PEM faculty, and trainees as they use PoCUS in the ED.

Fellows will have weekly scan shifts during which they will learn how to effectively and accurately acquire and interpret ultrasound images at the bedside. These sessions will be guided by the PEM PoCUS faculty, with the goal to slowly increase independent scanning as the fellow's skills improve.

Fellows will attend weekly tape review, at which quality assessment of ultrasound skills and study documentation will be assessed. They will also participate in didactic and hands-on tutorial sessions covering all aspects of pediatric emergency ultrasound.

Educational Experience

Each week, fellows will be expected to spent 8 hours on educational scan shifts. Early on, these will be in conjunction with the PoCUS faculty, with gradual independence for scan-time.

PoCUS didactics and tape-review will occur weekly, with teaching aimed towards the needs of the PoCUS fellow.

Last, the PoCUS fellow will be actively involved in the PEM fellowship training curriculum in PoCUS.

Opportunities for academic pursuits exist; mentorship for PoCUS research, educational research and curriculum development in available within our sub-division. If appropriate, this will include submission to the Institutional Review Board. For research projects, data collection will begin during the course of the fellowship. The ultimate goal is to submitted work as first author to the an appropriate conference for presentation: AAP, PAS, ACEP, SAEM, P2, or AIUM.

Image Review

Each study will be reviewed for quality of image acquisition and accuracy of interpretation by the PEM PoCUS faculty. The fellow will compile all technically appropriate studies into a web-based repository for future review and referral. Official studies will be documented, along with acquired educational studies.

Feedback will be ongoing throughout the fellowship.

Pediatric Ultrasound Fellowship Administrative/Education meeting will be held weekly following tape review sessions.

Weekly feedback will be given to fellows at tape review and fellowship meetings both held on a weekly basis.
