Additional Opportunities
Outside the ED, we have a strong and cooperative relationship with members of the echocardiology faculty, having completed several research projects, abstracts and publications in collaboration with their group. Fellows are free to spend time in the echo lab, although this is not a required component of the fellowship. AJ Dean has a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiology, and collegial relations with that department as well as with the Division of Vascular surgery would make it easy to set up specialized educational programs, although to this point, none of our fellows have chosen to do so.

The fellow is permitted to moonlight 2 shifts per month during the first half of the year, and 3 shifts per month thereafter at the approval of the fellowship director.
Fellows are encouraged to assist in ultrasound training sessions inside and outside the institution (see "Educational Experience", below).

920 completed, technically adequate, ultrasound exams. The fellow will record key segments of all studies on videotape.
RDMS accreditation is an optional goal
Attendance of weekly video review sessions on Tuesday of each week.

Teaching Goals
The fellow should have working lectures in all EMBU topics by graduation. The fellow has access to all the fellowship Director’s PowerPoint and Keynote presentations as well as the Division's EMBU multimedia archives as a starting point for their own lectures.
Development of resident and faculty sonography skills during weekly dedicated “sonography shift”

Academic Goals
Development, submission and completion of at least 1 IRB-approved sono project.
At least 1 abstract presented at national / international level EM or Sono meetings per year.
At least 1 publication in completed manuscript form, including one piece of original research to be submitted for peer-review.
(Note: Previous fellows have had no difficulty in exceeding these goals.)

Overview of the fellowship year
The year will fall into sections with evolving emphasis on different components of the fellowship.

  1. In the first quarter of the year, the fellow will concentrate on attaining a high level of proficiency in scanning in the entire range of emergency sonographic applications, and becoming familiar with the inner workings of the department and residency. Projects will be submitted to the IRB. One student / resident lecture will be given by the end of the August.
  2. In the second quarter of the year, research projects will get under way, and the fellow will focus on assimilating the cognitive materials for the RDMS examination. At least four additional student / resident lectures will be given by the end of the November. One abstract will be submitted for a local specialty meeting and/or the AIUM meeting (deadline early December). The fellow will start to perform the QA review of ultrasounds performed in the department.
  3. In the 3rd quarter, the fellow will concentrate increasingly on teaching and research. Investigations should be coming to a conclusion, and paper outlines will be drafted. The fellow will review all scans performed in the department. An abstract will be in preparation for the SAEM national meeting in May. The RDMS examination may be taken during this quarter. Additional student / resident lectures completed.
  4. In the final quarter reports of the research investigations will be drafted and submitted for publication.
